DreamQuest Programs FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the age range for your programs?
A: Our programs are for kids ages 7-16. However, we have successfully had other ages and some parents join as well! Please contact us if you have a specific request.

Q: Does my kid need previous experience with Unity or Game Design?
A: Kids do not need previous experience with Unity or have any game design skills. We recommend (but not required) that kids take our introductory classes before proceeding to our Unity Genre & Skill Intensives, but our programs are fitted to meet the needs of all kids with different levels or experience with Game Design.

Q: Do I need to bring a computer?
A: For our Summer Camps, yes. Each student must bring a laptop computer. Any recent Windows (2010 or newer) 7, 8, or 10, or Mac OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) or later laptop capable of playing games should be acceptable for students to build their games in Unity. Laptops with a discrete/3D/gaming video card will run Unity better. Please email if you have questions about your laptop. At previous programs, parents and students alike appreciated that they could continue to develop their games after the class and program was over! Students can borrow a laptop from a parent, sibling, or friend.

For our Afterschool Programs, it is highly recommended that students bring their own laptop, though not a hard requirement. If you have concerns or problems bringing a laptop to one of our Afterschool Programs, please email us at and we can discuss what options are available.

Q: What about an iPad/Chromebook/Netbook? Will that be good enough for class?
A: iPads, Chromebooks, and most netbooks are either unable to or not powerful enough to run the software we use in class to teach game development skills. Your student will have to bring a more traditional and powerful laptop computer to get the full experience from our camps and programs. This applies to both our Unity-based and Minecraft-based classes and camps.

Q: What software do I need?
A: Prior to the first day, students should install the latest version of the Unity editor. We use the free ‘Personal Edition,’ and students can either create their own personal Unity account with their email address, or use a shared classroom account to log into Unity. Students will also have access to a class webpage where they can quickly download assets and libraries that will help them build their games quickly.

Q: What will be covered?
A: Our Summer Camps cover game design and team collaboration skills, 2D and 3D art, sound creation, as well as basic visual game programming. For the more advanced students, C# coding is also covered.

Our Afterschool Programs are more limited in scope than our Summer Camps due to time constraints, and so our curriculum is more task-oriented and focused on teaching fundamental coding skills and how to use Unity or coding in Minecraft to accomplish specific goals.

Q: Do you provide lunch or snacks for the Summer Programs?
A: All students need to bring refillable water bottle each day to camp. Our camps run for 3.5 hours, and students should bring a light snack if they feel they will need one. If students are staying for both the morning and afternoon camps, they will need to provide their own lunch unless otherwise notified. Depending on the camp location, we may have access to a microwave for heating up food and a refrigerator for keeping lunches cold. After registration, you will be notified of the exact camp location and what amenities that location offers.

Q: Where are the actual location of the programs?

As of Spring 2016, our Afterschool Programs are being offered through Boulder Valley School District Lifelong Learning at a variety of elementary, K-8, and middle schools.

2016 Summer Programs will be offered at locations in the Boulder/Longmont, Lafayette/Louisville, and Denver/Cherry Creek areas. Keep an eye on this page and our Registration page for specific addresses as they become available.

  • Q: What is the cost of program? Do you offer scholarships?

A: Our 2016 Afterschool Programs cost $155 (plus materials fee) through BVSD Lifelong Learning, for 6 sessions of 1 hour and 15 minutes. This cost goes towards:

  • professional instructors
  • professional artists
  • professional developers
  • all necessary materials
  • software licenses and digital assets

The costs of our 2016 Summer Camps are $225 for our 1-week BVSD and DreamQuest Academy Introductory Camps, and $425  for our DreamQuest Academy Genre and Skill Intensive Camps. Camps being held during the July 4th holiday are slightly less due to one less day of camp; Introductory Camps for that week are $180 and Genre/Skill Camps are $383. We also will be offering a group of Advanced Camps beginning July 18 for $425. All Summer Camps have a materials fee of $40. All of this goes towards:

  • professional developers
  • all necessary materials
  • software licenses and digital assets

We do not currently offer scholarships, but our camp does qualify for most Dependent Care Accounts, Flexible Spending Accounts, and/or tax credit programs. We will provide our EIN to you upon registration.

Q: What is your cancellation policy?
We understand that there may be a need to withdraw from a DreamQuest program. We offer a full refund minus $100 administrative fee if you cancel 60 days or more before the program start date. If you cancel between 30 and 59 days from the program start date, you will receive a full refund minus a $200 administrative fee. If you cancel under 30 days from your child’s program start date, there is no refund.

There is no charge for changing your session date or locations 30 days or more before the program start date, so secure your spot now if space is still available. If a last-minute conflict arises that forces you to change session date or location, we will do our best to accommodate your request.

In the unlikely event of a program session or location having low enrollment, you will be contacted and have the option to either transfer to another date/location at no charge or receive a full refund.

Q: Can we invite others?
A: Yes! This is a great program for friends to register for together since they will be able to team up and work together on a game. Help us spread the word about our program by telling your friends and liking our Facebook page!

Q: Do you have a waiting list if the program session/location I want is full?
A: We will happily put your child on a waiting list and contact you in the unlikely event of a cancellation. To be put on a waiting list, email with the session and location you would like. We offer a professional, semi-private experience with limited space in each class, so if you need a specific date, register early to guarantee your child’s spot!
